Black Cumin Seed and Psoriasis

Black cumin seed is one of the ingredients of Soul and may help people with Psoriasis. There are no real psoriasis treatments that you can call a “cure”, but black cumin seed may help. Psoriasis is very common and no one really seems to know the causes and it can’t be cured. It’s thought to be an immune system problem that is triggered by stress, infections, and cold. Psoriasis is not contagious.Black Cumin Seed

Black cumin seed has been studied for its medicinal benefits and has been used throughout history for various skin conditions. A research study in Pharmacognosy Magazine compared the anti-psoriatic activity of black cumin seed against a conventional pharma based topical formulation called Tazarotene. It was found to be equally effective in relieving psoriasis symptoms. Other recent studies have concluded that it was also effective at reducing the severity of hand eczema (compared to conventional pharmacy drugs).

Black cumin seeds contain phytochemicals which contribute towards most of the medicinal benefits. Phytochemicals are naturally occurring chemicals in plants which are biologically active. The most active phytochemicals in black cumin seeds are thymoquinone, thymol hydroquinone, and thymol.

Apart from these phytochemicals, black cumin seeds are a good source of essential fats (omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids), essential amino acids, minerals, vitamins and dietary fibers.

There are two ways suggested using the black cumin seed in Soul for psoriasis. First is drinking a packet of Soul twice daily. Besides the cold pressed black cumin seed, Soul includes black raspberry seed, grape seed and more. The black cumin seed can regulate the immune system, help purify the blood, protect the body and improve digestion.

Psoriasis is deeply correlated with leaky gut syndrome. When the intestinal linings (gut linings) of your digestive tract become hyperpermeable and allow the unwanted stuff including undigested food and pathogens (disease-causing viruses, bacteria, and fungi) to enter your bloodstream. Your immune system doesn’t like these foreign invaders in your body and registers its protest by triggering an autoimmune reaction to cause inflammation and rapid growth of skin cells (as in the case of psoriasis).

Hence, the presence of pathogens in your body plays a crucial role in triggering psoriasis. By eliminating these pathogens from your body, black cumin seeds can help to calm down your immune system which in turn can relieve the inflammation and related psoriasis symptoms.

Various scientific researches have concluded that black cumin seed is quite effective against pathogens. Even the bacteria which are highly resistant to drugs such as- cholera bacterium and E.coli can also be eliminated by black cumin seeds.

A research study conducted at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, India tested 144 strains of bacteria- most of them were resistant to various antibiotics. Out of these 144 strains, 97 were inhibited by black cumin seed oil.
This ability of black cumin seeds to inhibit these “superbugs” brings a whole lot of benefits for people dealing with autoimmune disorders like psoriasis.

In addition, psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition. Anti-inflammatory foods like black cumin seeds, black raspberry seeds, grape seeds, etc should help benefit by reducing inflammation.

The second way is topical use. One suggestion is to slice open the packet of Soul after you drink it and rub the leftovers on the affected areas. This seems to help relieve the symptoms significantly. This has been tested in rat studies to show antipsoriatic properties and relief when applied externally. It was found to give reduced skin inflammation as well as deep skin moisturization (there are healthy fatty acids in black cumin seed oil).

Soul and Black cumin seed are natural and for most people is quite safe, but talk to your doctor if you have low blood pressure or take blood clotting medications, so you can modify your dosages of your medicines if needed. You probably may not want to eat black cumin seeds if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant since it can play a role in fertility. Breastfeeding should be fine, in fact, it may increase the flow of breast milk, just drink Soul in moderation until you see how it affects you. And always talk to your doctor about any food supplements you take.
